10 Easy Houseplants That Even Non-Gardeners Can Keep Alive

Posted on

About one year after we moved into our new home, my husband made a comment that we didn’t have any plants in the house. I loved the fact that he had missed having something green sprinkled throughout our otherwise neutral colored house, making it more homey and bringing life into every corner. I leapt at the opportunity to head to Home Depot’s nursery to see what might catch my eye.

You could say that I may have bit off more than I could chew because only a few weeks later, I had over 12 plants that had been placed throughout the house. I did not realize how committed one must be in order to keep them vibrant and fresh. I have since tailored my collection of botanicals to only those that can withstand my inconsistent watering and accidental neglect.

So, what are the best low maintenance houseplants? These are plants that I’ve personally had experience keeping alive for over 1 year (and let me pat myself on the back here because that is truly a miracle).

  1. Fiddle Leaf Figs
  2. Snake plant (also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue)
  3. Aloe Vera plant
  4. Spider plant
  5. Dieffenbachia
  6. Majesty Palm
  7. Succulents
  8. Golden Pothos
  9. Dracaena Fragrans
  10. Paddle Plant

Just go for it! You can’t go wrong with any of these!

Another thing that brings life into the home is fresh flowers. I love to buy fresh flowers if I happen to find them on sale–or if I just really love them, which was the case for those roses below. Can you believe there is NO filter on them?? Just natural beauty and the perfect lighting. I love to enhance a bouquet of flowers with cuttings from my yard to make a fuller bouquet. I don’t have a flower garden but I do have a lot of plants that I like to use cuttings from. For example, in the photo below and to the left, I used cuttings from my Crepe Myrtle to make the bouquet look fuller. And in the photo to the right, I used the yellow wildflowers to add depth to the arrangement.

These don’t always have to come from the store! You can make a bouquet out of just about any plant that you have in your yard! The flowers above were cut from my Crepe Myrtles in the backyard! It is a cheap and easy way to add color and a little something extra to your space. Do you have plants that have longer stems? Use those stems to create leaf bouquets!
